A Teddy Bear Business… How Cute
Initially this website was used to reach out to people who wanted to buy, sell, clean or restore antique teddy bears in the United Kingdom.
The site was owned and maintained by Paul and Debbie who have three children and live in North Wales. Below was the physical address of the location of their business:
Debbie Horley, 45 Chester Close, Shotton, Deeside,
Flintshire, CH5 1AX, UK
Debbie and Paul began collecting teddy bears in 1995 after their first visit to the Teddy Museum in Bournemouth. It is the visit; which inspired them. Initially Debbie loved bears and she owned one blue teddy called Mr. Fraggles. Paul also had a bear; which was gifted to him by his older sister Amanda whom he had named Growler.
After they ventured into business
Their first bear to be restored was named Scruff who they both found at a sorry state at a military shop in North Wales, hence the name Scruff. From there their business picked up and they established a bear antique store. Below are some of the bears that they had in their store…
I don’t know what happened to their business or if they still operate
They no longer use this website. I’ve therefore undertaken to re-purpose it and I will be sharing interesting ideas and stories about the restoration of bears as well as tips and guides on how to purchase genuine teddy bears.
Already I’ve published some stories about the same that I got from teddy bear lovers and I will continue updating the site with more interesting content. You can access the published posts by clicking through the various posts below.
When I was little
Nevertheless, I remember falling in love with a huge teddy bear I spotted while roaming around various museums. However, I wanted to purchase it so badly. But it wasn’t for sale. I ended up going to that museum every weekend just to get a glimpse of my favorite teddy bear. During my 13th birthday, I asked my parents to buy me one as a gift. But the exact bear I wanted wasn’t sold anywhere. So instead, my parents bought me a different bear.
It was cute and cuddly. But deep inside I felt sad because it wasn’t the same as my precious teddy. I cried for a few days and felt devastated. Since then, I promised myself that one day I’ll be able to build my own business selling teddy bears. Within the same year, my family decided to move to Los Angeles because my mom was offered a new job. She was a physical therapist and she paid for my tuition with her salary. Even though I was excited about exploring a different city, I knew I would miss visiting my favorite teddy bear.
When we first moved to L.A.
However, I found it difficult to adjust with my new surroundings. Therefore, I followed a strict diet plan to lose weight since I was 15 lbs overweight at the time. I worked really hard to make good grades because I wanted to make my parents proud. After I graduated with a degree in Business Administration, I decided it was finally time to fulfill my childhood dream. I talked to my parents about wanting to own a family business; which sold teddy bears.
At first they were hesitant because they didn’t see the potential it had compared to the modern toys kids prefer these days. My parents told me that the only way they’ll agree to my proposal is if I had enough capital. I ended up working double shifts in a clothing store. After two years, I was confident that I had enough money to start the business. My parents realized how much dedication I had regarding my proposal. So they finally agreed to open up a teddy bear family business with me.
We opened our store in downtown L.A.
The reason is because we all agreed that it was the best place to gain more exposure. It was opened to the public in 2012 and has since sold thousands of teddy bears. We didn’t expect people to fall in love with our products in a short period of time. My parents and I decided that it will be good to give back to the community. Since my mom used to have breast cancer, she suggested in helping out communities who assisted cancer patients.
It felt so fulfilling that with the money we saved up, we were able to share it with people in need. Our teddy bears are manufactured in a small factory we purchased in Philadelphia. We hired people who’ve had years of experience in the industry to ensure the highest standards in all our products. Our teddy bears range from the classic styles to more cuddly and kid friendly options. My personal favorite is our Limited Edition release for 2016; which is called “Bear of Hope”. It’s a medium sized bear; which has a heart shaped built in LED light.
Our family business is called Plush Teddies.
We started selling our products online in 2014. Our website contains a complete list of all our teddy bears. It also includes prices, descriptions and a free gift wrapping service when you reach a certain amount of purchase. We accept payments through Visa, MasterCard and Paypal. As of now, we only cater to the United States and Canada. However, we are working on reaching more parts of the world. We want everyone to discover our products and get to enjoy them.
Our company believes that teddy bears aren’t just for children. You can build your own collection even as an adult. For children, it’s a comforting companion they can have to cherish and keep as they get older. Most adults collect our products and use them as a display in their homes. According to them, they plan on handing down their collection to their children in the future.
